| About
four kilometres south of Xi'an, the Greater
Wild Goose Pagoda stands within the compound
of the Ci'en Monastery, which was built
in 648 by Emperor Gaozong (third emperor
of the Tang Dynasty). The eminent Tang Buddhist
master Xuan Zang brought back from his travels
in India on the Silk Road 657 volumes of
Buddhist scriptures and spent |

years in the temple researching and translating
them into 1335 Chinese volumes. Master Xuan Zang
personally designed the Pagoda and suggested to
the emperor that it be built to house the Buddhist
scriptures and it was constructed in 652. Originally
the pagoda had only five stories, a further two
stories were added during late reconstruction.
It's wood and brick structure, 64 meters high
in the shape of a square cone, and inside there
are staircases leading to the top giving a birdsight
view of the countryside and city. |
