Fengxiang, called Yongzhou in ancient times,

Before Qin Shihuang unified China in 221 B.C.,the
town had been the capital of the Qin Kingdom for
over a period of more than 300 years. |

| The
figurines are made of local clay, which is mixed
with a pulp and is painted after it is shaped.
The subjects of the figurines are wide-range.
Their bold and short shapes are wildly exaggerated
and are brightly colored with strong local style.
They are well liked by the local people, who use
them as toys and symbols of good fortune and happiness.
Each time when the Chinese New Year is around
the corner, local handicraftsmen carry the beautifully
painted clay-figurines on their shoulders or in
hand. They converge on the local market and set
up stalls in meandering lines, which makes the
country fair more flourishing and exciting during
the festival. |

| The
craft of making the painted clay-figurines of
Fengxiang has a recorded history of more than
300 years. According to folklore, however, the
figurines first appeared some 600 years ago. Combined
with simple and sincere feelings of the laboring
people, the painted clay-figurines reflect the
superb creative ability in art on the peasants.
They are typical articles of Chinese folk art,
and not only attract the attention of artists,
but also appeal very much to people of various
occupations both at home and abroad. |
